You must first find out what kind of thermistor it is? A thermistor is rated by how many ohms(electrical resistance)at 77deg F it is. For example a 10kohm thermistor measures 10,000 ohms at 77deg fahrenheit. Once that is found you must find a Temperature vs. Resistance Chart for that particular thermistor. Download the chart for a 10K thermistor Here here. Once this is done. Disconnect the wires connecting to the thermistor and put the thermistor in and environment where the absolute temperature is know. For example put the thermistor in Ice Water. Measure the Resistance with a good ohmmeter. The resistance should be around 32,660 ohms. If you check your thermistor chart you will see that at 32deg F. the corresponding resistance is 32,660 ohms. If the resistance measures open or infinity, shorted or no resistance, or the resistance differs substantially then the thermistor is bad and needs to be replaced. If it is where the chart says it should be then look to the wiring or control that it is connected to.
