In the May YAUNCO REPORT, we printed a list of questions testing your knowledge of SQUARE D residential products. Here are the answers:

- 1. What is the difference between a MAIN LUGS ONLY and a MAIN BREAKER loadcenter?
A MAIN BREAKER loadcenter has a main breaker installed in it, providing a single means of disconnecting the entire loadcenter. A MAIN LUGS ONLY loadcenter has no way of shutting down the whole loadcenter.
- 2. What does the term CONVERTIBLE MAINS mean?
CONVERTIBLE MAINS means the main breaker in the loadcenter can be converted to a lower amperage or can be converted into a main lugs only unit by using a correctly sized MAIN LUG KIT.
- 3. QO and HOMELINE breakers have the same internal tripping mechanisms (the FASTEST tripping breaker in the industry). What feature does the QO breaker have that the HOMELINE doesn’t?
QO breakers have the VISITRIP feature ( “red flag”) the tells when the breaker has tripped and needs to be reset.
- 4. There are 2 types of tandem breakers for QO loadcenters. What are they called and what loadcenters are they installed in?
QOT tandem breakers can only be installed in dual rated (6-12, 8-16, 30-40) loadcenters and have a special mounting cam for installation only into these. QO tandem breakers are for the single rated loadcenters.
- 5. How many HOMELINE HOMT tandem breakers fit into a HOM20M100C loadcenter?
TRICK QUESTION – The HOM20M100C does not accept ANY Homeline tandem breakers. Like the QOT breaker, the Homeline tandem can only be installed in a dual-rated loadcenter.
- 6. Name 3 other loadcenter manufacturers’ breakers that will fit into a HOMELINE loadcenter.
TRICK QUESTION #2 – Homeline loadcenters accept NO OTHER brand breaker.
- 7. Safety switches are rated as General Duty (GD) and Heavy Duty (HD). What is the maximum voltage that a General Duty switch can be used with?
General duty safety switches can be used in applications up to 240 volts.
- 8. Certain loadcenters and safety switches have RB as part of their product code. What does this designate?
RB indicates the unit is rated NEMA 3R/rainproof.
- 9. Name the 2 components that make up a 200 amp weatherproof breaker style disconnect. What parts make up a 100 amp unit?
a. Q22200NRB/QBL22200
b. Q02100BNRB/Q02100
- 10. General duty safety switches have D or DU in their product codes. What do these stand for?
D means a FUSED switch and DU is for a NON-FUSED switch.
