“Green” Building, NYS Code Requirements
Larry H. Richardson, VP of Sales and Service
I recently had an opportunity to attend a "Demystifying Green Building" seminar sponsored by the Sullivan Renaissance and hosted by the Center for Discovery. Two hours of the program was presented by Mark Anderson from the NYS Department of State Codes Division. Speaking to a mixed crowd of Code Enforcement/Building Inspectors, architects, builders, appointed planning board members and elected officials, Mr. Anderson stated that the present NYS Building Code is neutral when it comes to green building construction and systems.
Since the code is neither for nor against new materials and technologies, a builder should be prepared to supply the local building inspector with supporting documentation that will show how the plans design will support the basic code requirement of providing for a safe and healthy building environment.
