Newmac offers alternate fuel heating systems - Wood and Coal

Burt Robertson, HVAC Marketing Manager

More and more people are starting to scramble to find their best option for an alternate source of heat this winter. Newmac is no stranger to alternate fuels having just celebrated its 30th year of manufacturing a complete line of solid fuel and combination forced air furnaces. Newmac’s reputation for high quality furnaces includes add on models that provide a fuel choice of wood & coal. Newmac’s WAO (wood) and the GAO (coal) solid fuel add-on furnaces are designed for operation in conjunction with existing residential oil furnaces systems. The add-on furnace is installed next to the existing unit and the warm air duct from the existing furnace is connected to the return side of the add-on furnace. The supply duct on the top is connected to the supply ductwork for the building. Connecting the units in series like this allows the blower in the existing furnace to provide the airflow for both units.

Newmac also offers the CL combination wood/oil furnaces and coal/oil furnaces. The coal burning units have the option of burning wood with the addition of the optional wood burning plate which is placed over the shaker grates to protect them. The combination units have two heat exchangers: one has a combustion chamber for the oil and the other burns the wood. The two are connected by a common secondary heat exchanger where the flue gases mix. Other manufactures use one large chamber to burn both the wood/coal and oil which is very inefficient when burning oil in the large chamber. Newmac also makes the WB-100 wood furnace and the WG-100 wood coal furnace which ships with its own blower to be used as a stand alone heating system: great for large garages.

Just a note when selling any wood or coal fired units don’t over size the units. Oil fired units which are often oversized will shut off when there is no call for heat. The wood and coal units will damper back but will not shut off. They will still continue to smolder and put off heat. This is why it is important to know the heat loss of the job rather than simply installing the same size unit as the one being replaced.

We are stocking the add-on WAO (wood), GAO (coal/wood), the combination CL86/96C (wood/oil), and the CL86/96G (coal/wood/oil). Ask your salesman for literature on the Newmac line.
